Thanks to all of you who prayed for me and expressed your care and concern over the past two
In late May I had a case of pneumonia. It was an unpleasant sickness, of course, but nothing
terribly out of the ordinary. The antibiotics were effective and I recovered
and felt better. Very soon afterward, however, I started feeling sick again and it got worse
very quickly over the course of 12 hours. My wife took me to the ER at Northside Hospital
where a cat scan and a spinal tap led to a diagnosis of viral meningitis, an illness which
is very serious and often fatal. I was put on three strong antibiotics, all at very high
dosage, and mostly slept, connected to an IV machine for the next few days. By this Tuesday
I felt well enough to stand up and walk around, and yesterday was discharged and was able
to return home. I'm still moving slowly, but I am able to work at my desk without
any trouble so I am beginning to get caught up on work.
The cause of the meningitis is not certain, but it could have been the same
virus that triggered the pneumonia, or it could have been what is called drug-induced
meningitis. Interestingly, the antibiotic used to treat the pneumonia (Sulfamethoxazole)
has been known in very rare cases to induce meningitis. Or it could have come from an
outside source such as a mosquito.
Thankfully, recovery is expected to be complete eventually, with no long term adverse
effects. Thanks to all of you for your prayers and concerns, to my TA's who are
helping to get caught up on the grading and the emails, and to the very kind
doctors and staff at Northside Hospital.
